Open your gym bag right now. Go on, I'll wait.
Found an elastic with simply no elastic left that's been in there since March? A protein bar wrapper with half melted remnants from who even KNOWS when? A single sock that's given up on ever finding its match? Yeah. We thought so.
Your gym bag has become a junk drawer with a strap, and honestly, it's time for an edit. Not a full Marie Kondo moment (I'm still regretting the things I threw out in that phase of life), but just a real, honest look at what's actually earning its spot versus what's dead weight you've been hauling to and from the gym for reasons unknown.
The Dead Weight (Be Honest, It's Time)
The "just in case" outfit. The one you packed in April in case your plans changed. They didn't. Let it go.
Three water bottles. You need one. Maybe two if you're that organized and one is your electrolyte bottle. You do not need three.
The gym lock you haven't used since your gym switched to code lockers. We don't know why this is still in here either.
Every sample-size product you've ever been handed. If you haven't used it in a month, you're not going to.
What Actually Earns Its Spot
This is less about volume and more about versatility. The pieces and products that pull double duty so your bag stays light and your workout doesn't stall out because you forgot something.
Leggings that can transition. Squat rack to sidewalk, no wardrobe change required. If you're doing more than one thing in a day (gym, then errands, then dinner with a friend who "wants to check out that new place"), you need a pair built for that kind of range, not something you have to change out of the second you leave the studio.
One colorway you actually reach for. This is less practical, more real talk: the pieces that stay in rotation are the ones in a colour you're excited to wear, not just the ones on top of the pile. If Bubblegum and Cloud have taught us anything this summer, it's that a good colour does half the motivational work for you.
A packable layer. Something that folds down small but earns its keep, early morning gym runs and late evening ones need completely different temperature strategies, and one good packable piece solves both.
The Necessary Toiletries
Not the full skincare fridge. Just the handful of things that actually get used, every time.
Dry shampoo. One. That's it. You know why it's on here. You also know you only need one.
Deodorant. Non-negotiable, self-explanatory, no notes.
Face wipes or a mini cleanser. Optional, but the difference between walking out feeling refreshed versus just... sweaty in different clothes.
Hair elastic(s). The one thing we'll let you keep multiples of in your bag. Nothing worse than getting to the gym and not having one.
Your Hero Make-up Product. Not a whole routine, just the one thing that makes you feel like a person again. A tinted balm, a swipe of blush, mascara, whatever your version of "put together" is. You know exactly what it is without having to think about it.
The Actual Packing Edit
If you want the no-nonsense version: pack for the workout you're doing today, not the one you might theoretically do someday. Everything else is just extra weight you're carrying up three flights of stairs to a gym locker that's too small for it anyway.
Your bag should feel lighter walking in than it has in months. If it doesn't, you know what to do.
